In Passing—Autumn 2014...

... in town.

The longest shopfitting-out ever at last seems to be within days of readiness. Working within Castlemews Carpets today were two people who were putting up carpet racking. Shop signage's been up for months, a small selection of carpet pattern books placed within but the unit at Castle Mews has remained steadfastly empty and shut. Indeed, Castlemews Carpets has even been overtaken by Tasker's Carpets, who established themselves in a matter of days on the Square.

Moss Piglet opened yesterday. It didn't appear to be selling quite everything that its posters had proclaimed but it nevertheless looks interesting from the street and, of course, fills a gap in town. Not open on Mondays or Tuesdays, though. Expect an art gallery to follow, to the rear of the premises

Bar Llaeth has been baking what it calls artisan homemade bread for two years but is currently pushing its products with fliers and posters.

Jospehine's beauty parlour on Wernfechan has closed. A new one called Beauty & Beyond will open shortly on Upper Clwyd Street where Cwtch used to be.

Meanwhile, recent arrival (since mid-September) Cwtch has moved from Upper Clwyd to the prominent former visitor centre on the Square. And there was everyone thinking it would be branded Choo Choo, although it is associated with Choo Choo Maybe ladies' fashions are re-establishing themselves in town…

Annie's has transformed into The Seasonal Kitchen. Nice name and nice idea. Did wander over to try it out to see whether there were the same staff and high culinary standards as was the case when the new people took over from Annie's but, well, the shop had shut by the time I arrived at 3.55 this Saturday afternoon. Bar Llaeth was still open, though. Over the years, that's been an enduring café.

Annie sold to current proprietors in September 2013. They kept the name and ethos, serving well turned out light lunch dishes. And also actually opening every day, earlier than Annie and also not taking the long holidays for which Annie was infamous. Now more of a restaurant, it adds a little competition to the high-end market dominated by On the Hill and latterly the Middleton Grill. The Seasonal Kitchen also launches at the very time The Star sees its fourth transformation from bistro to tapas bar to Mexican back to a bistro.
