A Troubled Land

This location has had an interesting recent history.

After just nine weeks of trading, Tesco announced in October 2006 that it wished to expand onto this very area. This would involve the closure of Mike Williams Engineering, a site leased by owner Mike Williams to one of his former employees. The lessee put up a fight, citing nowhere else to go in Rhuthun/Ruthin and the loss of jobs—in spite of land available, with a little effort, farther along Lôn Parcwr.

Then the unthinkable happened. The planning committee turned the expansion plans down, citing a Tesco-induced reduction in footfall in Rhuthun.

In April 2007, a Caerdydd/Cardiff planning inspector over-ruled the council and granted permission. The inspector's decision was inevitable; indeed, planning officers had feared a refusal would lead to the government calling in the decision: officers recommended go-ahead in the first place.

Mike Williams Engineer closed anyway. Tesco, however, never took up the option of expansion and the land was put up for sale. Recently, and for a very short time, it was a sales outlet for Pine Direct.

This month, however, Huws Gray builders merchants began readying the site. They will join Richard Williams, Morgan's, Ruthin Décor, King's and Wynnstay Farmers, all selling tools and other things associated with builders. Quite an array of businesses, in fact.

Huws Gray is expected to open on September 1st, 2013.
