Shades of Deep Purple

After reading this post, we invite readers to take our short survey on this subject.

In a comment on this site that dates back as far as July 2011, the proprietor of Faerie Pirates/Hardly Nickels said,

"If someone is not happy with the colour Purple [as applied their shop frontage], let me know your reason and I will consider it".
Someone has come up with a reason and it's the council. They aren't happy with the deep purple & green on the frontage of a listed building in what is a conservation area. They've asked the owners to paint the shop into something more in keeping with the building and its Square surroundings.

Faerie Pirates/Hardly Nickels has started a petition to try to persuade the council that the frontage should remain as it is. But, surely, if you give way on one thing, you've then set a precedent for others to follow. Where does it end? Does this give licence for anyone in control of a listed building to make any changes they like? Perhaps Wetherspoon's might then feel it acceptable to destroy a 16th century ceiling. Ahem. But you get my point, added to which others have already felt compelled to go that bit further (no doubt at a cost) because their building is listed. That's a penalty of owing or renting one.

Faerie Pirates/Hardly Nickels is playing the economic card. Hard times and all that mean that the council should be encouraging and not discouraging small enterprises like theirs. There's a legitimate question: what comes first? Economic activity in the town or its thoughtful conservation? Or, perhaps in a place such as Rhuthun/Ruthin, said to have more listed buildings than any other in Wales, there's a firm link between the two.

We wonder what blog readers make of this. Try our short survey. And leave a comment, below.

Finally, on the subject of Faerie Pirates/Hardly Nickels, we were wrong about being wrong. In other words, we were right. In spite of the comment here, the proprietor is the same person who opened a shop in the former Sandpiper, Well Street. Not that it makes much difference: perhaps Faerie Pirates/Hardly Nickels is a joint enterprise.
