Suddenly Two Come along at Once

OK, ok, I may have been mistaken about the new proprietor of the purple shop on the Square. Then again, in the original report on the most eye-catching shop in Rhuthun, I did say "I may be wrong..."

I wasn't wrong, though, about the former Slater's site, as a comment now somewhat buried arrived yesterday from one of the proprietors of Ruthin Décor confirms.

Back to the colour purple and it seems that the new shop might be selling pieces by local artisans and crafts people. This is not the first time such a shop has opened in Rhuthun. Remember in 2008 the craft shop on the side of Birch House along Hen Lôn Parcwr? Here was a fairly large floor area selling crafts from a range of local people. I think the owner was from Bodfari (though, on past performance, I wouldn't swear to it). That struggled on for a while before closing, no doubt because of its location which, it has to be said, pre-Birch House makeover was at the time not the most salubrious. It was also very much out on a limb.

And there may yet be further competition for this new purple venture. You wait years for someone to sell arts & crafts and suddenly two come along at once. Yesterday saw the first ever Rhyl community market in Rhuthun. The market will be at the farmers' market each Friday. It's aimed at residents who might like to sell home grown and home-made produce, including arts & crafts. When my informant took a look early yesterday morning, it just seemed to be an ordinary street market (though it may have developed as the morning went on).

Why establish such a market at such a fringe location, again in competition with the town? Might this be better in the town centre? Where, exactly, though because, unlike in Rhyl where the market originated, there is no pedestrianised space in the town. It might be nice to see St Peter's Square cordoned off for it, though. One point worth making is that the county council rightly wants to oversee such markets and from next month is introducing powers to regulate this sort of activity on public streets. This may affect anyone who wishes to pitch to sell to the public (e.g. Rhesgoed).
