Something Else…

... that will be making a difference in town is the forthcoming Ruthin Décor move from the barrenness of the industrial estate to the former Slater's site in the town centre.

Most movements between town and trading estate have been one way, from town. Take Lewis Electrics, Uproar and Uptown Fabrics as examples. Here, though, it's great to see confidence in the town centre.

Yes, the redevelopment of this patchy and down-at-heel piece of estate is going to be most welcome. Slater's left just over three years ago, lured away not by poor Rhuthun returns (for the car showroom was actually profitable) but by the joint issues of a site that no longer reached Citroën's standards and rising land values. As regards the latter, Slater's moved out just at the start of the recession and couldn't sell; and as for the former, well, Slater's Abergele site is not much better.

But not everyone might welcome this development, including:
  • Those who love that ubiquitous sign of urban decay, (now gone over) buddleia
  • Those who currently park free of charge on both sides of the current site
  • Possibly King's, opposite, the traditional town centre hardware store that will be selling products in competition.
The real competition nevertheless remains outside the town, in bunkers at huge retail parks.
