Hilly Street Blues

Some changes down Clwyd Street in January and only for the worst, I’m afraid.

Capricorn, the animal rescue charity shop, is to close at the end of today. It's been open for about 18 months. Even a charity shops appears hit by recessionary Britain. The manageress had worked very hard to stock the shop. There were even reported issues of her facing unpaid bills from a previous lessee, going back some years.

The two antiques shops, recently closed, one at the former health & safety shop (and before that, a financial services outlet), the other where the locksmith once was, have now seen their stock removed.

Spaven’s sweet shop and pottery has also closed. Brimming with stock, it always seemed very lively with children—when schools were out or at weekends. A branch of the rejuvenated Yr Wyddgrug/Mold concern that morphed from newsagent to sweet shop with café, it's been resident in Rhuthun/Ruthin for about 30 months and even saw off older established competitor Sweetie Heaven. It took over lock stock from Doodle's. Spaven's was also a reason cited by Tilly Mint for its own closure 12 months ago—owing to the noise above from stomping feet. Whether this was true or not, I don't know.

So, that's four additional shops now empty and looking forlorn.
