Still Open... Just

The Castle Hotel hasn't closed after all… not quite yet. It *did* close earlier in the month but has reopened. It was expected to have shut again from Monday, to facilitate the Wetherspoon's take-over but this is now expected in another fortnight at least. This means you still have an opportunity to stay or dine there. Such is the VAT increase that the lunches once advertised at £5.00 per main course have now increased to £5.95, if the new banner outside the Anchor is anything to go by (both the Castle Hotel and the Anchor are owned by Stephanie's Llangollen Hotels and both have hitherto used the same lunchtime offers).

Of course, VAT would've added 10p to the £5 menu.

There's still much controversy in Rhuthun/Ruthin as to the coming J D Wetherspoon's. I listen a lot and it would seem that the younger the adult, the more enthused they are for such a change. There are exceptions, of course. There's never been more discussion among publicans since the Middleton Arms split off from the Castle Hotel itself, back in the 1970s.

Interestingly, is the Anchor with its cheaper lunch menu probably likely to be the most affected of the town pubs and restaurants?

We recently asked your views as to whether JDW was a good thing. Here, with thanks to those who voted, are the results, shown as percentages, in orange. Answers to the same questions asked in February 2009 is depicted in green. Click to enlarge.

Almost exactly two thirds of respondents felt that Wetherspoon's would have a positive affect (by appealing to those who don't normally frequent pubs or by boosting the town’s overall pub trade). A year ago, when asked, respondents felt this figure was approximately 55 per cent. This was at a time when Wetherspoon's was off the cards. About a third more people responded this time than last.
