Unusual Temperature

With the salt mountain opposite the council's Lôn Parcwr depot about one quarter of its original size since its delivery this autumn and with the media concentrating less on roads and more on air and rail, who knows whether the council or the nation will have enough salt to see it through the current cold snap. Snap? Bit prolonged for that.

Temperatures were noticeably less cold yesterday, compared to Monday, hovering at around freezing point during the day and –2°C during the start of snow flurries at 10 p.m. But here's a graph of the temperature indicated in the car, on its way early Monday morning from Rhuthun towards England. Shown is the 11 mile stretch between Rhuthun and Yr Wyddgrug/Mold, though not beyond (this was relatively static, temperature wise).

The green line and y-axis on the left refers to the height in feet above sea level. The blue line and axis on the right shows recorded temperatures, from 0°C to –14°C. Though not the highest point on the journey, the lowest temperature was –13°C at Lanferres. Rhuthun was at –10°C.

Note something spectacular. The temperature almost at the Clwyd Gate, at Rhesgoed farm shop, was –5°C, a whole 8°C warmer than in Llanferres and 6°C warmer than Rhuthun. This sudden warming lasted but a few yards before the temperature rapidly dropped again.

Can anyone explain this difference? Please don't say that there's a fault with the car thermometer: it's a Jag.
