Gritting our Teeth

On Thursday it started, a bloom of white on the hills as if sugar showing through on ageing chocolate. A full fortnight after the first hill snows usually arrive. 24 hours later, it made up for it.

The full force came on Friday morning, after about 7.30 a.m. for between 1½ and two hours, causing some concern and chaos. Thick and fast it fell. Schools closed and the town fell silent. With it came arctic temperatures continuing into the weekend and this week, as low at –11½°C so far. The temperature reached –0.5°C yesterday at 2 p.m.

As I write this at 4.50 a.m. the predicted snow is steadily falling. As yet, accumulations are modest. Some snow blows across the mainly bare main roads. Who knows where this will lead as the morning progresses.

Take a look at what was a once optimistic, proud and unsullied salt mound opposite the council's Lôn Parcwr depot. Not even into December and a fifth of the salt has already disappeared. Such is the unseasonality of things this November. Keep this weather up and could we be out of grit by Christmas? And the prospects of replenished stock? Join the national queue. No one seems to be able to dig it up fast enough.

2010 really has been a difficult year for winter weather. Snow lingered continuously on the Clwydian Range/Bryniau Clwyd from 19th December 2009 till 23 March 2010. That was for 95 days. 247 days later and it's back as if it’s never been away...
