Mainly Clwyd Street

We've always marked recent changes to Rhuthun/Ruthin. One thing you can say about the pace of change is that it doesn't, well, change.

Yesterday's Collectables opened on Saturday 19th June, on Clwyd Street. Another tea shop? Well, yes, but with about a third of its space given over to antiques and collectables. There's part of another 1970s' tea set, for example, or perhaps something from the 1980s. And several nice red pieces in the window, creating quite an effect. The proprietors are from Wrexham and they've opened the property up by removing panelling to create an attractive timber framed display area. These, you may recall, were the same people who were considering the shop next to Ruthin Trader on St Peter's Square. This all collapsed owing to problems with utilities. The Clwyd Street premises were previously a health & safety shop, barber, financial services centre and for many years an antiques shop where, at a price, you could always obtain an old postcard of Rhuthun, or two.

Further up Clwyd Street at the longstanding empty unit at No. 11, there’s now window cleaner obscuring the view inside and some basic stock within, largely in old banana boxes. It appears to be party stationery. Anyone any further information?

Further up again is Castle Bell, Rhuthun's remaining newsagent. The new proprietors have this month repainted the front from beige or cream and green to an attractive and arresting bluey-red.

The bottom of Clwyd Street sees life being breathed back into The Star. This is still understood be a bistro in the making, a possible welcome addition to the evening scene in Rhuthun, as pubs currently cater principally for younger people.

Much internal and external work continues at the long-standing vacancy next to Boots the Chemist. This was the former Lucinda fashion shop. The large and vandalism-prone windows are now replaced in preparation for a florist, though there remains some concern that this venture may not actually now start.
