If this Measures Wealth…

Another proxy measure of a town's relative wealth is the number of tearooms and coffee shops it can support. With the closure this week of Nelson's, Well Street, not only does this leave another gap in town, it reduces the number of tearooms to ten.

Ten's still a lot. That's equivalent to 1.9 per thousand population in Rhuthun/Ruthin. But if you go back to summer 2009, that figure would've been 2.3, when the Watergate and successor to the Coffee Mill, Espresso Espresso, were also both open. These figures include Caffi Rh/Café R but exclude the oulet off Lôn Parcwr once labelled Tanzaro.

Compare this to Dinbych/Denbigh and Yr Wyddgrug/Mold. Dinbych supports five such outlets, equivalent to 0.7 per thousand, while there are 14 in Yr Wyddgrug, not including the outside caterer near the Midland Bank, equivalent to 1.5. Two of Yr Wyddgrug's are charitable undertakings: Vision for Mission, off New Street and the Salvation Army, Wrexham Street. If you remove both and concentrate on commercial businesses, that gives a per thousand equivalent of 1.3.

Nelson's established itself in the former Lewis Electrics premises, in December 2006. It was run by the daughter of Lewis Electrics. Indeed, it's reported that she named it after her grandfather. It had a bit of a reputation of attracting mothers and young families. The message in the window is quite open and honest: Nelson's closed for financial reasons. Indeed, the message was quite heartfelt and you have to feel sorry for the faded dream of a young businesswoman.

If the number of teashops measures relative wealth, this week Rhuthun's slightly worse off.
