Crows Welcome Back

Not quite all of Rhuthun/Ruthin's approximately 30 official and unofficial scarecrows have been dismantled. But Saturday was the last official day of the scarecrow trail. Those who took part enjoyed it, though in truth there didn't seem a huge number of participants. Then again, it was a new initiative. It was a wonderful idea and those who built scarecrows put much effort and imagination into them. And Rhuthun managed some much-needed good media publicity. Will we see more scarecrows next year, perhaps? If there's to be a next year.

Sad that two of the three shops supporting the venture by selling trail information went out of business, one during the trail and another before the starter's pistol was loaded, let alone fired.

One person writing on here asked whether in future years the week could be extended. This was to give children participants more time to have a go. After all, it seems most suited to younger people. For children, the trail was quite scattered, with scarecrows reported from as far as Maes Hafod (Llanfwrog Urban) to Haulfryn & Rhos Street. For such a range of destinations, you really needed a car.

If people are to be encouraged to do this in the evening, a number of scarecrows found themselves hidden away after hours (e.g. W & G Jones butchers and Wayfarer, both of Well Street and at 3A Upper Clwyd Street).

We hope to see the scarecrow trail as a regular feature on the Rhuthun calendar. We should thank Ymlaen Rhuthun or their work and in encouraging such a high interest from scarecrow manufacturers. Next up from Ymlaen is the medieval show, next month, at Glasdir.
