The Price of Travel

As crude hit a new high yesterday, on the back of a 17 per cent increase in January & February, it once again brings into sharp relief the cost of motoring. You can’t but notice that petrol prices in Rhuthun/Ruthin, as elsewhere, are beginning to rocket. As at yesterday, the cheapest price of unleaded in Rhuthun was £5.41 per gallon and for diesel £5.45.

For diesel, as at yesterday, this equates almost exactly to the March 2008 position, two years ago. Things, as thy song suggests, can only get better worse.

Rhuthun is very vulnerable to fuel price rises. We might grin and bear it now but there’s renewed talk about hyper-oil inflation. What effect might this have on a rural economy such as ours? In the past, we’ve written about the implications for Rhuthun. In summary, etrol is vital to Rhuthun because:
  1. Rhuthun is largely a dormitory settlement. A significant proportion of workers commutes out, from either necessity or choice.

  2. At some point, people need to travel for major shops—Chester, Wrecsam, Llandudno, Broughton, even Lerpwl/Liverpool.

  3. Medical care mean long journeys, for patients and visitors: district general hospitals are at Bodelwyddan (33 miles round trip) or Wrecsam (36 miles) and a round trip to either will cost just short of a gallon of fuel.

  4. Rhuthun relies on visitors for its economy. It’s not the cost of parking that will put people off but the cost of fuel.

  5. The nature of Rhuthun & its location means the physical distance of travelling is great, no matter where you go and for what.
When we last posted substantially on petrol, we remarked that Bridge Services was trying to offer attractive pricing. This was in a landscape of falling prices after a considerable hike. Now, the rise has been less step, much longer and almost accepted. The differential between petrol and diesel has all but gone, with one garage in Rhuthun yesterday charging the same price for both. And we’re back to the familiar position where Rhuthun’s prices are higher than its neighbours, by several pence a litre.
