More on Pubs

It seems the Rhuthun Four get a reprieve. The Eastertide enforced pub closure following the under aged drinking sting operation has been deferred by seven days, to prevent the impression that the town is closed over the holiday weekend.

There have been those who feel that the proposed two day ban, no matter when, was unjustifiably harsh. There are equally those who’ve voiced the opinion that you can’t get tough enough on landlords who sell to under-aged drinkers. Perhaps closure the following weekend is the compromise.

One town centre pub worker—whom I cannot name—commented directly to me that the young girl involved in her pub looked anything but young. She could’ve been mistaken for someone at least 18 and nearer 20.

But surely that’s the point, isn’t t?

One inn that had no problem over the two or three test purchase occasions was the Clwyd Gate. That’s because it’s been closed for a while and is now undergoing refurbishment. Yesterday, a banner stretched out beneath it, pegged on the steep verge overlooking Rhuthun/Ruthin—asking prospective employees to phone.

The Clwyd Gate Inn’s had an interesting recent history. If memory serves, it closed upon the death of the owner, after which it passed about four years ago to none other than Stephanie Booth. Once that person got rid of it (back to the original owner’s family?) there erupted a dispute between the inn and the motel behind, over access. Or something like that. There was certainly a very public spat in the papers. Wish I’d paid more attention to this at the time.

Unlike some pubs on high passes (the Cat & Fiddle springs to mind), the Clwyd Gate never seemed to have any attraction other than its view over Dyffryn Clwyd. It somehow lacked something, atmosphere perhaps. An outpost of Rhuthun yet too far from Mold, there never seemed to be any particular reason to visit the Clwyd Gate for its own sake. We trust the refurbishment will remedy that. Perhaps the Clwyd Gate should specialise in the lucrative wedding reception market. Can you think of a better place on a clear summer’s evening for bride, groom and guests than overlooking the Vale?
