In what amounts to very good news for their competitors, it's going to be a dry Easter at four Rhuthun/Ruthin pubs. That's the penalty licensees will need to pay to avert a significant fine following a "sting" where the four were caught serving alcohol to under-aged drinkers as young as *15*. The pubs were:
  • The Myddleton Arms (spelt "Middleton" in yesterday's Daily Post report)
  • The Farmers's Arms
  • Park Place
  • The Corporation
At least one of the above has some reputation as a place where young people buy alcohol. Enforcement officers must at least have had suspicions.

In situations such as this, we all look for people to blame. While the licensees rightly have the responsibility of policing their establishments and are responsible if they allow or condone this activity, if this is regularly going on, what on earth are parents doing? And young people who drink must also take some responsibility for themselves, as we've seen in the UK debate last week over the age of criminal responsibility. 15 year olds entering pubs must know this is unacceptable.

It would've been good for the Daily Post to have named those pubs that passed the "sting" unscathed. All we know is that "other pubs" turned down under-aged drinkers on the same evening the four were caught. The vigilant pubs should be praised for their alertness.

The Mydd has recently undergone a three-four week internal refurbishment, scarily close to the Christmas 2009 rush, now that it's under the management of the people who run the Picture House. The Eagles in Dinbych/Denbigh, also run by the same management, is one of six in Dinbych also caught in the sting.

The licensees' names have yet to appear above the door of the Myddleton Arms. Then again, they're in good company. There’s also no name above the Castle Hotel next door. While on this subject, observant readers may have noticed that the usual black on white licence details are less common than they once were. That at the Anchor is white on red, and the Vaults is carved large on slate.
