Indian Summer

During some future heritage weekend, the weather is going to break and we’ll have lashings of rain. But to date, we’ve enjoyed fine weather, since the very first. And yesterday’s Indian summer sunshine—seeing late September temperatures in the afternoon climb to just over 20°c—just added to the attractiveness of the town and brought the people out. Saturday was one of the busiest but, in our opinion, 2007’s was the heritage zenith (thus far).

By late morning, our Car Park Watch Team had reported that every car park bar three was full or near enough so. Troed y Rhiw and Wernfechan were the slightly off-centre parking grounds with spaces aplenty whereas, on an average Saturday, all car parks sadly fit this category. Park Road was ¾ full.

This year saw a new ‘Stones of Rhuthun’ tour, presumably linking the local geology with the materials used in our older buildings. New venues TÅ· Gwyn and Hengoed were again open for booked tours; Rose Cottage sadly was not; and Llanfwrog Church was added. The Gaol remains open today, free of charge.

The heritage day also gave a helping hand to the last seasonal produce market of the year. These local markets need our support as, to be honest, it’s not been the easiest season for them this year. It’s already contracted from the Market Place on St Peter’s Square to the Old Gaol and, even here, there were fewer stands than last year. Produce market sales of foodstuffs have been reasonable throughout the year but other goods seemed much slower to shift.

Today’s weather isn’t quite so promising. But it will be dry and there’s still plenty of buildings open. We’d recommend the photographic exhibition within the Library, where you can see a collection of images illustrating the changes on St Peter’s Square. The Manor House, Well Street, continues to show local art.
