Food for a Fiver

“Be disappointed no longer because we have done exactly what Wetherspoons planned to do except it is now located at The Anchor.”

So says the full-page advert in both this week’s Denbighshire Visitor and Denbighshire Free Press, for The Malt House Restaurant at the Old Anchor.

So here we have a makeover at the second Booth pub in Rhuthun. In terms of value for money, the package and menu seems appealing and not dissimilar to the sort of fare offered by Wetherspoon’s, even down to £1 a pint for Carling larger.

Neither the Malt House nor the Steak House at the Castle Hotel will enjoy the same brand awareness of Wetherspoon’s but the Booths have now positioned themselves firmly away from the higher and middle-of-the-road end of the restaurant market, away from an arena in which it would be hard for them to compete and one no doubt prone to recession. It’s all about finding a niche in difficult times.

As with many things, no doubt you get what you pay for and there will be those who chose to bypass the Malt House (and the Steak House). That misses the point of a different offer. Providing a weekday including Saturday lunchtime menu for £5 at both the Booth establishments from last week aims to attract people who might otherwise eat at a café.

Also available at all Llangollen Hotels (renamed from Lloyd Hotels) is a Sunday to Thursday £10 B&B offer, though the conditions mean two people must book a three course meal. Total including food is about £55 for a couple.

Strangely, the Anchor’s address is quoted as Rhos Street. Stranger still is a January launch.
