The Show goes On

Cae Ddol may in the past have offered a far better atmosphere but the organisers of this year’s Flower Show & Carnival will be grateful that the farmers’ mart provided far more protection from the rain. Yes, there were a few light downpours but the show went on largely uninterrupted, though the gymnasts and dancers withdrew because of the wind and weather. But outside the horse & livestock field, the metalled surface remained dry under foot, unlike Cae Ddol's grass.

The move to the farmers auction site was experimental. Other than weather, the reasons were financial: there was no expensive marquee to hire, the site was offered free of charge, and the single entrance ensured all patrons had to pay. Cae Ddol offered so many access points that it was impossible to police. But when compared to Cae Ddol, the somewhat soulless mart site remained a compromise.

Yet, the show committee will be quite happy with the takings this year, after one year’s break. It’s too early to tell whether any records were broken but the earlier date this year (rather than mid August) may have an effect. The entrance was busy throughout, even though it seemed once inside, people tended to disappear within the vast grounds. It did give the perception that there were fewer present than usual, though the whole site is so deceptive.

Carnival

What are we to do with the carnival? Can’t more local schools and businesses be encouraged to enter a float? Where was the L E Jones lorry, for example? The scouts? The clubs, societies and charities?

The more people who are *in* the carnival, the more people who will of necessity come *out* to watch. Because above all what was most disappointing about the procession through town was how few people were there to welcome and support it.
