A Distasteful Post

But, regrettably, a necessary one. Sorry.

Three cheers for the pupils of Ysgol Borthyn in their campaign to rid the Cunning Green of dog dirt, following two stepping in some during a recent walk to the library. And well done the Free Press for taking up the issue on its front page.

The town council provides dog bins at strategic points, including this on the Cunning GreenSadly, irresponsible dog owners aren’t confined to the Cunning Green. My test walk last week revealed nothing on the Cunning Green itself (though leaves can cover the evidence) but dog dirt in *two* locations on Clwyd Street. And Market Street, though clean at the time, is not immune and for some years parts reeked of the fetid odour of dog.

Let’s be clear. This isn’t the council’s fault (though I expect some poor soul actually has to deal with it. Not a job I’d want). Dog walkers themselves are squarely to blame, those who allow their charges to defecate on the pavement without any consideration for others.

Policing is pretty much a non-starter. It relies instead on all dog owners taking responsibility for their pets, whether in town, the Cunning Green, the path through Ysgol Brynhyfryd, through the football pitch or Cae Ddol.

Many months ago, I challenged a dog fouler who began to walk off leaving a fresh mess. He said he actually felt too squeamish to deal with his own dog’s excrement and therefore left it. How disappointing is that? Laziness probably had something to do with it, too. We need to make a stand against these social lepers and who better than responsible early morning dog owners who come across others who are less so.

Yes, we need to make a stand. I’d certainly challenge anyone I saw again, though I accept some people are bashful in this regard.
