The Rotunda

Yesterday, Cat left a simple comment on the post on the Llanfwrog community centre (hereinafter the Rotunda). ‘Do we really need *another* community centre?’

It was an interesting comment and although we can only speculate, Cat probably made it because Llanfwrog is already blessed with a number of community spaces and buildings.

But, what does the Rotunda do that others can’t? The simple answer to Cat’s question is probably, ‘yes we do need another centre’, not least because of the sports facilities on offer (and planned). These alone mark out the Rotunda as special and different. As for the other community spaces in Llanfwrog,

Trem-y-Foel, offers a friendly environment for groups to meet and is ideal for smaller numbers only. The same is true of the other sheltered accommodation centre at Llys Erw.

Capel Bathania, Mwrog Street, runs a hall adjacent to its chapel. It’s in reasonable condition and more use could be made of this space but as with any building of this sort of age, it won’t always meet modern requirements.

The refurbishment of the Hafod Almshouse site almost opposite the Rotunda includes a modern but very small community space.

The Drill Hall is, let’s face it, past its prime, isn’t welcoming or encouraging, and is associated with youth work which, valuable as it is, puts other sections of the community off. The considerable funding required to overhaul and refurbish the Drill Hall might better be saved for Phase 2 of the Rotunda.

The former Llanfwrog Parish Institute, Mwrog Street, closed for many years, was sold in 2002 and recently converted into housing. Its under-use illustrates well that older buildings can’t provide the flexible, modular and modern facilities we expect today.

What the Rotunda therefore provides is an easy-to-use, flexible open space, maximising the opportunity for different types of groups, small or larger. It’s circular nature adds to this versatility and is unique to the area.

It has a well equipped, modern kitchen and bar. Outside it will become an exciting sports facility to complement those on offer at the leisure centre/secondary school. And at the equivalent of just £250 per person for each person living in Llanfwrog, it’s a small investment in the local community.
