The Llanfwrog Community Centre officially opened its doors yesterday to an admiring public. At the junction of Lôn Fawr and Mwrog Street, it’s a 175 sq m space owned and managed by the wider Llanfwrog community. Built by a newly constituted Llanfwrog Community Trust under Elwyn Edewards, it comes with kitchen, bar, changing facilities and showers. There’s a mezzanine with views south across the flood lit tennis courts and three soon-to-be built all weather pitches for junior and youth football.
It cost £500,000 and there are plans for a second building & phase to enhance facilities further (including changing for sports), at £430,000. Much of the money to date was raised with help from the Assembly.
It’s a fairly unique looking building. Clad in timber, the external maintenance in future years is likely to be high. Someone has suggested that it will cost £5,000 per annum to run. In order to set the project on an even keel, the organising committee is funding two posts for a two-year period to foster regular support from the community, by which time the site is expected to break even year-on-year (we shall see).
Meanwhile, the one drawback appears to be only one set of stairs to the upper floor. How did that get through?
