Rhuthun-on-Sea

General view of the mobilised work at Glasdir including pile driverFlash floods in parts of Lloegr/England this week have caused misery for many.

The Bryant Homes/Taylor Woodrow new Glasdir housing development started last week. This is on an ancient flood plain. A pile driver has been placing large and substantial concrete piles into the earth. This seems a prelude to building up the land to combat any prospect of flooding.

The problem with causing such an obstruction in a flood plain is that, if and when it happens, floodwater will be forced elsewhere, presumably between the houses on the existing Rhuthun boundary and Glasdir.

Piles at GlasdirSuch preparation not only raises the land, it will raise the cost of the development such that the new housing will likely be even less affordable for those already living here, added to which are insurance costs. Who’s to say whether properties will get reasonable insurance as a result of their proximity to the flood plain. We are sure, though, that the Environment Agency has given its permission to build at Glasdir but there may still be a residual risk of flooding.
