Sustainability

With Denbighshire’s councillors passing phase one of the Glasdir development this week, another part of the county’s 2025 vision is complete.

An abstract from the vision states that in 2025:

“Ruthin’s position as a vibrant, historic market town will have been secured by the Glasdir development, the presence of Denbighshire County Council’s County Hall, the presence of a major retailer in Lôn Parcwr and the development of the craft centre as a facility of national importance.”

That’s a tick in the box for Glasdir, something that’s as much to do with sustainability as anything else. Whether county hall (opened 2005) will remain as such by 2025 is a matter of debate. It presupposes that the current local government structure is itself stable – remembering that Cyngor Sir Ddinbych/Denbighshire’s successor Clwyd managed just 22 years.

We aren’t sure whether Tesco (opened this July) contributes to sustainability or not, with a resultant drop in town trade said to be 15 per cent. Perhaps it’s too early to tell.

To come are phase two housing plus light industry (and even possibly a primary school) at Glasdir and the redevelopment of the craft centre site, at one point due to start this autumn (but we have no idea whether this is still planned).
