Springing Up

Just like the spring hedgerows on the lanes around Rhuthun, the last three weeks have seen Rhuthun in bloom – with new shops to confound the pessimists who feel that Rhuthun’s post-Tesco 21st century prosperity is short lived.

In defiance of what people may think, and in spite of the closure of Newyddion Rhuthun News, there are yet more indications that the town’s in good heart. And more independent shops to peruse.

Temporary Craft Centre

With a scaled-down display of for-sale contemporary arts, the temporarily relocated Craft Centre opened on Well Street (as predicted here) during the last week of April 2007. Occupying the former Cronin News, the unit latterly was the Iechyd Da juice bar that closed in March.

As an indication of what we might expect when the Craft Centre proper is rebuilt, the temporary site contains an “information point” rather than a full information centre, as was the case at the now demolished former Craft Centre building. This means you can pick up leaflets and even see an accommodation list but, other than that, you need to contact Llangollen Tourist Information Centre.

It no longer opens on Sundays or bank holidays.

Square Interiors
Bathroom and kitchen designs, tiles and flooring feature in this shop that opened three weeks ago on St Peter’s Square. This long-standing empty unit was once Tommy’s (hairdresser, now at the bottom of Clwyd Street) and before that Vanity Fair women’s clothes. Competition for MRJ Bathrooms, Lôn Parcwr?

Uptown Furnishings & Interior Design Studio

This now occupies the former First Phase Rugby, Well Street, which closed in March. The new premises specialises in drapes, soft furnishings and blinds, and also trades as Vale Blinds, in association with Wrexham Blinds. It offers something that, until now, Rhuthun residents have needed to leave town to find.

Traed Bach

Traed Bach will from 19 May 2007 occupy the former Reebee’s green-grocery in Clwyd Street, which closed in October 2006 (Reebee’s florist remains open).

It appears that Traed Bach (“little feet”) will sell children’s and women’s novelty footwear. It already trades as mail order from Bylchau, Llansannan, near Dinbych.
