Chip ’Em?

Information packs on wheelie bins have arrived in Rhuthun/Ruthin homes. Wheelies themselves are delivered from today. 3,000 residents in Rhuthun and Dinbych will get them in the next fortnight. The switch date away from plastic sacks is 21 May. Whether you feel that your two wheelies make an acceptable adornment to your home is purely personal. But they’ve apparently already saved the equivalent of 11 jumbo jet-loads of waste since their May 2006 introduction in parts of Prestatyn and Rhyl. Can’t be bad.

In August 2006, Denbighshire council moved to defend the inclusion of computer chips within the wheelies. Along with other areas of Britain, residents were concerned that their bins might be monitored electronically.

What a further opportunity in reducing rubbish a chip system might be, though. There’s nothing like the prospect of paying a surcharge to encourage people to recycle a little more rather than lazily throwing items out that needn’t be dumped. Perhaps there could be a rebate for those consistently throwing away less. After all, landfill is getting so much scarcer. Wheelies are set to increase recyclables by 25 per cent. Even families of five are said to cope well with a single bin, provided they recycle. What more might be achieved with a chip and charge? Is it such a bad idea?
