Road to Nowhere

The town council would like Rhuthun’s new road named. After all, "ffordd gyswllt ogleddol Rhuthun/Ruthin northern link road" is a bit clumsy. They’d also like it signed. We think naming it will be the easier to do.

Signing presents a bit of a problem. Approaching from the north, from Dinbych/Denbigh, do you sign town centre traffic through the green splendour of the northern link road or send it through residential Borthyn? If through the link road, traffic goes directly to Tesco. Traffic ends up avoiding Cae Ddol car park, the shops at the bottom of Clwyd Street, Bridge Services and the Gaol. There’d be complaints. Send it via the link road and Borthyn continues with its much reduced traffic flow, to the benefit of its residents.

It seems logical, however, to send *through* traffic from the north to both Wrecsam and Yr Wyddgrug/Mold via the link road, then respectively along either Station Road or Wernfechan at the so-called Briec roundabout. Could the link road then become the A525 Rhyl-Denbigh-Wrexham road? Wrexham signs only appear at Briec, anyway, and not at Bridge Services, so Wrecsam-bound drivers wouold welcome directions via the link road.

Signing ‘Town Centre’ via Borthyn and ‘County Hall’ via the link road might solve the 'Town Centre' signage conundrum. Or possibly ‘Town Centre (West)’ and ‘Town Centre (East)’ respectively, though this implies Rhuthun's the size of Birmingham.

But there are further issues. The town council calls the link road a “by-pass”. Was it ever conceived as such? Surely, it is a road to unlock housing development and light industry potential to Rhuthun’s north. When housing starts to the south of the link road and industrial units to the north, the road will have a very different “feel” to it, not perhaps as confined as Borthyn, but nonetheless occupied and busy. How suited will the link road then be, as a “by-pass”?
