If you were in Rhuthun yesterday evening for late night shopping, you definitely weren’t in good company. There were so few people until 7 p.m. it was almost embarrassing. Things did liven up after 7 o’clock but to nowhere near the same extent as in some previous years. Were they all in Tesco? Well, even Tesco seemed quiet. Perhaps it was the weather? Unlike the week before, it was dry.This is in spite of this season’s strong campaign to win shoppers to the town at Christmas, like in no previous year. Small traders have themselves come together to fight back against the pressures they face, promoting the three evenings heavily and where possible offering something unusual.
And where were the families? Come on Rhuthun. Do justice to the traders who need Christmas trade now, more than ever.
There’s still one evening left (21st). Not to mention daylight hours. And as for 7th, it was rather unfortunate that it coincided with gale force winds and torrential rain; at one point, I saw just three people on Rhuthun’s streets that evening.
