Today is National Independents' Day - being marked by small retailers across Britain.
It's no surprise to learn that they are concerned about supermarkets. 55 per cent of 1,100 independents surveyed stated that customers visited their shops as much for local news and conversation as groceries. As high as 90 per cent felt concerned for the communities they serve owing to the advance of supermarkets (mind you, they would say that, wouldn't they).
Meanwhile, a Surrey University academic studying small retailers urged the public to support independent stores. "Just by calling into one more local shop than we already do will generate an extra 60 million shopping trips."
