A Bit on the Fence?

These are the published views about Rhuthun / Ruthin's Tesco by Mark Young, an independent candidate who intends standing in the 2007 Welsh Assembly elections. He last stood in the 2005 General Election, but not in the constituency containing Rhuthun / Ruthin. He received 442 votes, or 1.4%.

Are his views a little on the fence?

"It is always an interesting time when towns expand and huge chainstores such as Tesco come to our local towns. This is what is about to happen in Ruthin. There is no doubt that the supermarket will offer opportunity - it will bring with it jobs, staff training and development, and flexible opening hours for farmers, and shift workers.

"But what about the impact on our small traders and farmers? This is a time when we need to see our local MP's offering support to small businesses and help them sort out the problems of having to compete against such a large company as Tesco.

"We will need to see the issue of accessible parking sorted out - make it free! Afterall that is what Tesco is going to do. All carparks in Ruthin should be free in order to help all our local businesses. We should also look at offering some sort of rebate on the small business rates or perhaps even offer a tier structure during the first crucial stages of business. Less regulation for small business would go some way to helping. A fairer ratings system is what is needed.

"I believe that if we want to keep our local Welsh heritage and local small traders who have become our friends and way of Welsh life then we all have a choice! The choice for all of us is that we don't have to become a clone and shop in a clone shop. Remember keep it local!"
