20 Outside Schools

One minute read ▼

These new road signs have appeared on Mold Road, either side of the vehicular entrances to Ysgol Brynhyfryd and Ruthin School. The stylised dragon device needs a bit of interpretation. But once you see it then it becomes obvious it’s a reminder to stick to 20 mph outside the school.

There are a number of issues with this, though.

First, as we said on the sixth month anniversary of 20 mph, few actually stick to 20 outside or near the schools. Remember that sixth formers from both schools walk along Mold Road and Rhos Street and can do so at any time, including at Ruthin School at weekends.

In defending their dislike of 20 mph, motorists seem to say how important 20 mph is outside schools. It’s a justification to have 30 mph everywhere else. Judging by what we see, in reality motorists do not keep to 20 at these two schools.

Secondly, if motorists say they are so concerned about 20 mph outside schools, perhaps they should remember that children do not exclusively walk up Rhos Street and Mold Road. They use other roads at school times and at other times.

I certainly dislike travelling at 20 mph... but I do appreciate the reasons for it.

Our *estimate* of traffic speeds at Ysgol Brynhyfryd, below. I think the ‘problem’ is that, leaving Rhuthun, beyond the terraced housing Mold Road feels as if it should be more than 20.
