Valuing What We Have

Town and Around is always a good read. It actually covers stories and issues in more depth than the Free Press. Unlike the Free Press, it majors on ‘long form’ articles with some in-depth analysis. The current Spring 2024 issue is out and available free while stocks from the library. There weren’t many left on Friday when I picked mine up. (The previous edition was probably one of their best, by the way.)

What struck me most about the Spring 2024 edition was the front page article ‘Old Retail Dead? Not Yet it Isn’t’. It’s fair to say there’s a lot of chatter about town centre vacancies and the type of shops. It was thus good to see something positively pointing out what we have. We hope the naysayers will take note.

Amid the complaints and grumbles, we rarely value what we actually have.

According to Town and Around, there are over 100 shops, offices or organisations within Rhuthun/Ruthin’s main streets. They go on to list what they have on offer. They say, ‘Now if that isn’t a surprising collection of goods and services for a town of 6,000 people, we aren’t sure what is’.

Also on Friday, we heard from the town council for the first time as regards the velodrome. It was on the BBC. Gavin Harris of the Manor House commented that ‘the project has been brought to a close’. Gavin must’ve been disappointed but he pointed no fingers. He explained that there was the possibility of investigating other grants to bridge the velodrome financial gap but these were not guaranteed. While searching, inflation pressures would continue to escalate further. He said that the town council would simply be ‘chasing our tail’.
