♫ On the Third (Satur)day of Christmas... 🐔

Tomorrow, we are at the start of three Saturdays of Christmas specials aimed at keeping us local this festive period.

■ Tomorrow is by far the most important: it's the so-called Christmas extravaganza that has been organised not by anyone officially but by local entrepreneurs at Ruthin Artisans' Market CIC. There'll be market stalls in four or five locations. There's also some entertainment (but don't let some on the bill put you off, though.) The preparation must've been massive. And with fine but cold weather expected, the event should not be a washout. (Yes, we've enjoyed lovely mild weather for November, up to yesterday. Expect our first significant frost Saturday morning.)

■ The following Saturday and there's very little going on except the illumination of the Christmas tree on the Square. Why was this not held after the extravaganza? Or, why not hold the extravaganza a week later? Either would've been seamless.

■ And, the week after is the now annual diesel fest that is the convoy of lighted wagons through town. We are never quite sure about the sustainability of this particular event. It remains popular, though. It usually rains.

But what of the publicity for these events? There doesn't appear to be much, other than Facebook. And, there's certainly little evidence that organisers have come together in an effort to present a unified, combined programme. Yesterday, the Free Press ran something on tomorrow's extravaganza but it did not mention anything on other days.

It's such a shame that the three events appear uncoordinated. Haven't we missed a trick by failing to combine everything into one large publicity opportunity? Is this typical of Rhuthun/Ruthin? Lots of good ideas but are we just too tribal? It's as if no one acknowledges the existence of the others.
