What Future for the Future?—2

There were so few comments during the recent Dyfodol Rhuthun Future event that there is a danger that the more wacky of them may actually take hold.

Take the call for a McDonald's, a KFC, a Pizza Hut and a Burger King. Judging by the spelling of 'pizza', these ideas were from young people. I doubt any of the aforementioned have business plans to open branches in a settlement the size of Rhuthun/Ruthin but it is a little worrying that in the quintessential town of independent traders there should be a clamour for such homogenisation. Not to mention its associated parking problems, litter and late night noise.

That said, any one of these businesses might have a positive effect on footfall. Unless, as is more likely, they went for a drive-through on the fringe of town. But we would suggest that all this is fanciful.

We also assume that a youngster added 'lle cyac' and 'wal ddringo'. This probably demonstrates that young people feel that they don't have enough facilities locally and the suggestions mask a serious point. But where can you possibly kayak on our stretch of the Afon Clwyd? Or do they mean some sort of indoor space?

One commenter in all seriousness said, 'Love the Square. Can't wait for it to be busier'. Well, we've waited long enough. Does the scribe think that someone can wave a magic wand? Or are they hoping that levelling up will automatically result in a surge of people?

Another felt that the 'Finger sign posts just add to street clutter'. Here, we simply disagree.

Another wrote, 'Shame we lost green space/recreation [areas] when [Ysgol Brynhyfryd’s] school fields were fenced off'. Yes, it is a shame it had to come to that. This, of course, is a safeguarding issue and there's no rowing back on that sort of thing.

There was an interesting comment that there were 'No road signs to send Denbigh traffic on to Link Road [Ffordd Glasdir]. Instead traffic through town'. Maybe but maybe not. There are certainly no Dinbych signs onto the 'Link Road', although there is one for Dinbych on Ffordd Glasdir itself, approaching the Dyffryn Services roundabout. Instead, Dinbych traffic is signed along Station Road, Park Road and Borthyn and definitely not through town. My thought is that the county council should direct Dinbych via the 'Link Road', not Borthyn. There's an added benefit in that some of it is 30 mph. But anyone going through town knows that way, is ignoring the suggested Borthyn route and would continue to ignore the 'Link Road'..

'Craft centre is only a shadow if its former self. Only one or two artists'. This refers to the units let and here the commenter is spot on.

One person added a request for 'siopau dillad' and this goes back to the days when we were famous for our women's fashion. One person was specific, however, in asking for a branch of Zara. Dream on!
