What Future for the Future?—1

Rhuthun/Ruthin is suffering from 'future fatigue'. There appeared to be very few people willing to engage this time with the Rhuthun Future fortnight that finished yesterday. I think people would much rather be snidey on Facebook about projects that actually take place than engage beforehand in trying to shape the direction of those developments.

The disengagement is a shame. First, because it gives those in authority a mandate to do what they want under the guise of a patina of participatory democracy. 'We did consult, you know, and no one objected. So you only have yourselves to blame.' We end up with what 'they' want, not what we need.

Secondly, allied to this, those who engage tend to do so from a well thought out perspective, not a knee-jerk reaction.

Thirdly, one of the key reasons why we were chosen as the best place in which to live was because of our participation. Is Dyfodol Rhuthun Future now engagement for engagement's sake?

One of the issues was that the Dyfodol Rhuthun Future exhibition in Yr Hen Lys was not open as much as in previous times. I guess that this depends upon the availability of Y Gwirfoddolwyr, the base of volunteers who staff Yr Hen Lys.

Have the Rhuthun Future events now had their day?

To be continued...
