Hiatus on Well Street

She's been talking about it for some time but on Saturday, finally, the proprietrix of Candy Shack retired. Well, we suspect that it's semi-retirement. Whatever it is, she'll not be running her Well Street premises.

Candy Shack started life in the autumn of 2014 towards the bottom of Clwyd Street. It sold children's sweets. In 2015, for a while, it expanded next door as Pandemonium, some sort of children's play and party area. Siop Nain closed in 2018 and after a hiccup the Candy Shack subsequently expanded into Siop Nain's former café premises in Well Street. 

In the meantime, when Gail’s in Upper Clwyd Street closed, Candy Shack took over, renaming it as Pen y Bryn. Whereas Candy Shack sold ice cream, sweets and whatnot, Pen y Bryn was a 'proper' café. Then, in December 2022, Pen y Bryn merged with Candy Shack in Well Street, closing Pen y Bryn (which reopened as Teacups under new management). Candy Shack on Well Street was now a proper café (alongside sweets for children) but was never advertised as such.

Perhaps that's why it didn't tend to attract too many patrons. Mind you, there aren't thousands of people about, these days. We managed to get a seat during the Open Doors Saturday, when the café was doing good business... but that was very much an exception. We found the food was plentiful and of a good quality. We noticed its menu was incredibly diverse. It was *very* different and a pleasant change to the tired offering of the previous Siop Nain. 

After a period of closure, we understand Candy Shack will reopen with the existing staff (minus the proprietrix, though we bet she'll help out). 

In the meantime, would it be too much to ask the landlord to use the closure to give the premises a whitewash? Some of the emulsion has chipped or warn off and it's now looking a little tired.
