Painful One-fifth of a Mile

One of the two proposed Rhuthun/Ruthin exceptions to the new 20 mph limit was not implemented.  That is the section of the B5105 at Galltegfa, approaching Llanfwrog. This will now become 20 mph. I say *will*, because it was missed off yesterday's road sign change and the 30 mph signs continue in place, at the time of writing.

The history of this short section of road is interesting. Under Clwyd highways, it was always set at the national speed limit. The 30 mph limit began towards Rhuthun/Ruthin on the bend by the Clocaenog turning.

Early in Denbighshire highways' days, the 30 mph limit was extended 0.2 miles south to just beyond Firgrove Cottage.

How come?

It was under pressure from the late county councillor Elwyn Edwards. Informed sources suggest that one of his relatives (possibly a nephew) had occupied one of the houses opposite the sub-station and, as a result, Edwards wanted the section to be 30 mph.

Given that there was a single but outlying street light opposite Firgrove Cottage, this gave Edwards the justification to get his officers to proceed. It could therefore be argued that there was little justification for 30 mph. Development was on one side of the road only. Firgrove cottage was a country outlier.

A 'national speed limit applies' sign atop the hedge, following what we assume was a bash. Note the traffic order consultation document partly obscured by foliage attached below the 30 sign to the post

Few if any Cerrigydrudion to Rhuthun vehicles upon rounding the sweeping left hand bend change their speed to anywhere near 30 mph, till they reach the natural speed reduction of the tighter bend. What chance, then, of anyone sticking to 20 mph?

Of all the 20 mph sections in the Rhuthun/Ruthin area, it is this more than any other that feels wrong, as if common sense has been abandoned.
