One other thing in Wetherspoon's favour is its refusal to accept dogs.
Now I know that this will be controversial, given the burgeoning post-coronavirus appeal of dogs as pets, but not everyone eating a meal or frequenting a café wants to see a dog within.
✓ Chatwin's doesn't permit dogs within its indoors cafe area
We have made huge strides in food hygiene only to throw it all away by allowing dogs to enter most of our cafés. It's as if, post coronavirus, hospitality has fallen over itself to permit dogs. Dogs are now de rigueur. Or, it's as if some failure to entertain dogs will place a café under threat; as such, there's almost a rush to be seen to be dog friendly. Smaller businesses feel that they cannot afford to turn away the dog segment.
Yet, to me, it's axiomatic that dogs and food simply don't mix. Nor do dogs and children within, either, when you consider the potential for trips with hot drinks, and even dog bites. Dogs can be irrational and unpredictable. Dogs don't make for a welcoming environment.
Known Rhuthun café-type establishments that do not permit dogs:
Wetherspoon's | Strictly no dogs permitted |
Chatwin's | Only for takeaway food or in café if sitting outside |
Costa | Official corporate policy is no dogs permitted |
Note that these are a regional and the national chains. There must a reason why they have each adopted their canine approach. They wouldn't risk alienating the majority of customers by allowing dogs.
We are unsure of the position of Caffi Rh/Café R, as Denbighshire Leisure's website has blocked our access to it.
Update: Caffi Rh accepts dogs within.
