At the top of the Nant y Garth, the 40 zone stretches out far too far, tempting motorists to exceed the posted 40 mph limit, as here
To much general agreement, we're about to see the promised speed limit on the Nant y Garth pass. This will be one of the consequences of the approx. three weeks closure starting tomorrow (for structural work).
We don't disagree with the limit but when this was officially agreed, back in August 2022, we felt that the pass was self-limiting to either 30 or 40 mph, depending upon the radii of each bend. We also felt that the 40 zone would stretch too far along the straight at the top of the Nant y Garth.
Mind you, it was originally recommended to limit speed to 30 mph, so I suppose that 40 is something of a win for common sense.
- As predicted, the 40 mph zone extends too far along the straight stretch at the top of the pass (see photo, top). The limit should've been tighter to the top of the pass. All that happens is that motorists ignore the limit and overtake anyway. They can see a clear road ahead of them.
- Also as predicted, those with a mind to exceed 40 are still doing so. I refer to motorcyclists seen taking the twists and turns irresponsibly and even a wagon doing about 50 mph (early in the morning, on the assumption no doubt that there was nothing else about). We witnessed a Porsche accelerating hard towards us, only having to brake sharply when the driver caught up traffic on a bend.
Pity that during the structural works-related road closure they didn't refresh the 'Araf/Slow' warning on the tarmac
