Not Such a Happy Christmas

In a post-coronavirus legacy, our town council meetings continue to be broadcast. The only county councillor present at yesterday evening's town council got a tongue lashing, for installing new exercise equipment at Cae Ddol without any consultation whatsoever. This within days of our hearing whether the levelling up (which includes Cae Ddol) bid would be accepted.

In progress

Phrases or words used were that it was 'almost a discourtesy' that the county council had not consulted with or even informed the town council and that the county council was being 'rude'. Those words from Cllr Harris might have been expected, given Harris's sometime views on the county council but he was joined by others, including mayor of Rhuthun/Ruthin Cllr Menna Jones. Deputy mayor Anne Roberts called the county council's actions 'offensive'.

It's certainly true that the area is now something of a mishmash of play equipment and that part of the park, once open to enjoy the mature trees, has now changed into something of a playground. I doubt anyone would argue that about the equipment itself; it's location is something else.

It's also worth remembering that it has been the town not county council which has recently spent most at Cae Ddol, responsible for the skateboard park and the improvements to the lake.

In Secret

The velodrome proposal continues in full secrecy. It appeared under Parts I and II of the agenda. That under Part II (the exclusion of the press and public) just leaves the people of Rhuthun guessing. Unlike Ruthin Future (The Masterplan) and the Old Courthouse, both town council initiatives, both aired fully in the open, the talk of the velodrome always seems to be behind closed doors. Little wonder prospective neighbours are concerned. To them, the more secretive it is, the more it appears a done deal. Let's face it, now with Denbighshire Leisure's involvement, it now probably is. But it started as a town council proposal and it is the town council who will get the blame from those who are not content.
