Bemoaning the Cost of Living: Bread

Now that the Eagle's Bakery is looking less and less likely to reopen, we like to buy Village Bakery bread from the Co-op. It's local (Minera, Wrexham). It's from a chain that trades ethically.

But it's now expensive. Back in February, it was £1.65 for a standard cut white loaf.  In the spring, it reached £1.95. From the summer, it is now £2.15. Enough was enough. We sought alternatives. Nothing in Aldi cut the mustard, because every loaf therein seemed to contain the best-avoided calcium propionate: we wished to avoid eating an anti-fungicide.

Then we discovered that Tesco was selling Village Bakery's white sliced at £1.75. That's 45p less than the Co-op but 5p more than the Co-op in February.

What to put on it? A glass jar of peanut butter is one staple hereabouts. We prefer the smaller glass jars, even though the larger non-recyclable plastic tubs are cheaper per lb. The wholefood shop stocks peanut butter at £3.75. The Co-op has identical jars at £2.95 each. Tesco's same sized glass jar was £2.60 (or, £2 if you have a clubcard). Aldi's 100 per cent peanut butter comes in at £1.15.

Now, I know we all know where we *should* be buying but...
