More on those Bollards

A choice comment on Facebook about the Pont Howkin bollards was this: that people who make such decisions about our town don't even live in our town.

Well, if they only knew! It turns out that this particular decision was taken by someone who doesn't live in Rhuthun/Ruthin. Doesn't even live in Denbighshire. Nor in Wales. But England.

But does it matter? I live in Rhuthun and make decisions that impact on Llandudno, Wrexham, Chester, Dolgellau... it really doesn't actually matter where I live. What relevance is it?

The bollards on Pont Howkin are there to protect the cantilever area where there's a weakness. But, there's another reason. There's stone loss from the old bridge and the highways people aren't sure why. They could blunder in and make repairs totalling a large six figure sum and they might not actually cure the problem. So, it seems prudent to discount whether the weakness is something to do with the cantilever elements or not and in order to do that the bridge margins need bollards to prevent any vehicular overrun.

The likelihood of any vehicles actually moving across the footway is actually very low
