40 Years On

It cannot be easy for any family to come to terms even 40 years later with the death of a son. It was indeed 40 years ago that Welsh Guards' Lance Sergeant James Russell Carlyle died in action during the Falklands campaign. His comrades turned out in force yesterday to honour his name. This was part of the Welsh Guards' 'Ride of Respect' event and resulted in a short remembrance service led by the Warden. This was well organised and credit also goes to the town council for the way in which it put together a reception at The Old Courthouse for the family, the riders and for other veterans. There was a good turn out of the general public at the Wynnstay Road war memorial, too.

There were two county councillors present and the contrast between them couldn't be clearer. One was in a smart grey lounge suit and the other in shorts and crocs clogs, as if he'd just come directly from a beach BBQ.

Such an event would not be complete without our own British Legion's Mr Fowley. We've no idea who the chap in the bowler hat was. We believe that retired guards commissioned officers (whether Welsh or otherwise) are able to wear a bowler at remembrance events but we aren't sure.

It's also sobering that in 2022 we appear to be being softened up for active service in Ukraine, if you interpret the UK government's statements.
