Christmas Quiz with a Difference

Yesterday evening's history club meeting was a bit of a disaster but, given the type of people who support the club, there was much tolerance and good humour. Those who were in The Old Courthouse were treated to a quiz, following the main speaker. Those attending online got the first 10 questions and nothing more. In spite of waving and shouting, the quiz master seemed oblivious to the online pleas. He simply couldn't hear the commotion.

The situation was actually quite humorous, with much laughter and jollity. If the first 10 questions were anything to go by, then the remainder of the quiz would've been equally excellent. Here are those first 10.

1. Why is the Boar's Head so named? It was part of the heraldry of the Myddleton family.

2. Why is the Feathers so named? After the emblem of the Prince of Bohemia (apparently). Not after the prince of Wales.

3. Why is Dog Lane so named? After Prince Dogmael, apparently. He of the house of Cunedda. We have a Ffordd Cunedda in Rhuthun/Ruthin and its location would make an ideal quiz question.

4. What building was on the site of Ysgol Borthyn? Llanfwrog church's tithe barn.

5. What is the name of the stream under Mwrog Street? The Arfon.

6. What is the origin of the name Jumbo Hill? Apparently, it's a corruption of Majuba Hill, the 1881 site of a Boer War battle. It seems that the Red Caps when trudging from the old site at Memorial Buildings to the new likened Bryn Goodman to Majuba Hill. The last battle of the Boer War, it was a resounding victory for the Boers. That battle must've left quite a scar on our collective memory, for the school relocated in 1893, 12 years after the battle and still the Red Caps conjured up the name.

7. Where was Rhuthun's short-lived racecourse? Parc y Dre.

8. Where was Ruthin's first council estate? Maes y Dre.

9. Which was the first street in Rhuthun to be tarmacked? Park Road.
