Signs of the Times

Wednesday, and the poles went in. Yesterday, much of the town council's new pedestrian finger posts followed. Personally, I think they look a little stark, with the non-standard town council's chosen font against a brilliant white background. But, you cannot argue with the intent or the impact. They're a good advert and people who visit Rhuthun/Ruthin should now have no excuse to stay on the Square. In a very clear way, they pinpoint what Rhuthun has to offer and, let's hope, should encourage visitors to wander around much more. That the town council has deliberately veered away from the usual black & gold cast iron posts results in something that is now unmissable.

One slight issue, though. Why-oh-why is are the distances measures in metres and not yards? A small point, you might think, but street signage in the UK is still imperial and not metric. These seem out-of-step.

It's also a pity that the two existing and vintage finger posts at Galltegfa and Lôn Fawr are not fully refurbished, though Galltegfa's has at least enjoyed a paint-up this year, even if the one remaining finger has not been returned.

Finally, methinks that some of the signs need a slight readjustment: that at the Feathers end of Station Walk shows the town centre and the police station pointing in slightly different directions.

Budget for the signs: £20,000. Things move slowly: these were first proposed in 2002. They've only taken 20 years
