Yesterday, the council closed Market Street to tweak the temporary one-way system. This was a result of Wetherspoon's wagons being unable to stop or drive in. So, what happened was that some of the barriers designed to keep pedestrians safe were removed and this occurred over a considerable stretch. The end product, at least for pedestrians, is a more 'naked' scheme and one that appears to leave them feeling slightly more vulnerable, as motorists may if they choose cross into the active travel area and also park there. It seems to water down the attractiveness for walkers of a scheme designed to ensure suitable distancing in a virus-laden world.
