Overnight on November 5th, some wag not only went to great lengths to produce semi-professional looking signs, they cabled tied them to a couple of the bollards forming part of the new one-way system, which aims to improve pedestrian confidence in the coronavirus world.
However amusing these were, it did indicate a remarkable lack of understanding. This is not the town council's scheme. Neither is Gavin Harris, the mayor, personally responsible. He is accused of feathering his own nest, because his business fronts Well Street but in all honest I'd say that it detracts from the Manor House, as people can no longer so easily pull over and unload. Harris was also one of the few on social media pushing the consultation.
The mayor has taken a lot of personal abuse over this. That is unacceptable. We need to remember that the current incumbent is probably the hardest working mayor we've had in recent times and he must surely compare to the greats, such as Lecomber. He seems to be quite strong about it all but who knows how he's feeling inside.
