Smiles as Five Miles Repealed

Spotted yesterday (Sunday) in town were two visitors. At least I didn't recognise them¹ and they were acting just like tourists: very leisurely wandering around and pausing at each shop window to take a peek. Can't imagine residents doing that, not looking in every one.

If indeed these were visitors, they were a day early. This reminds us that as of today, the five mile rule of thumb is repealed and we can travel anywhere we like. The result in town was... nothing. No one. And I don't mean no extra people. I mean that post lockdown to which we have become accustomed: still a fairly dead town. Early days, of course, and it was a Monday. We all know Mondays are quiet, with a number of shops shutting.

One exception to the Monday trend was Naturally Ethical. It opened today for the first time, post-lockdown. Welcome back. They'e been operating online, of course they have, but it's nevertheless good to see the lights on again. Naturally Ethical closes each week on Tuesdays rather than Mondays.

A shop that opens on a Sunday but not a Monday is the Coffee Cabin. Staring in are the proprietors of the former purple shop once in this very same unit. Faerie Pirates/Hardly Nickels was its name but everyone called it the purple shop. Note the appropriately coloured shirt.

¹ In a town of 5,700, we cannot recognise everyone
