Mococo to Go

Mococo cleared out its Rhuthun/Ruthin premises today. Out went literally every piece of jewellery, leaving an empty shop with nothing but advertising material and a space as deserted as a beach in a winter storm.

In any case, Mococo had been slow in opening its shops. To date, it has traded only at Yr Wyddgrug/Mold and even that's on a trial basis. Its other locations—Warrington, Liverpool, Wrexham and Birkenhead—all remain closed. It's website is back up, though, having initially been suspended at lockdown.

Rhuthun was Mococo's first ever shop. It dates back to 2006. Its appearance was initially thanks to the success of Tupperware-but-for-jewellery type parties in people's homes, from 2004. In 2010, it moved from premises at Castle Mews to the former Ethel Austin shop at the very top of Well Street. Four years later, it had the temerity to begin trading on Sundays, such was Mococo's rarity value.

It's departure is a blow for Rhuthun. It's not just that this is our last jeweller. It was always something of a shining bastion and a portal to a different world. Its opulence seemed to place Rhuthun on a pedestal. It was as if a little piece of Knightsbridge had come to humble Rhuthun that was suddenly accessible and within reach without the need to travel to the city. Such was its regal purple carepeting and its vivid, gleaming interior. This meant it always felt a little out of place, if we're honest, in spite of the relative prosperity of the area. Some would argue, though, that this meant it was vacuous.

Still in Mococo's window... clearly now not the case

Some rumours suggest it and two other Mococos will remain a jeweller's under the Clogau brand. We don't know the veracity of this. There's one of seven Clogau shops at Broughton and an outlet at Cheshire Oaks.
