A Return... but not to Normal

It was a season ago. When lockdown began, sunset in Rhuthun/Ruthin was 6.32p.m. Today, lockdown's eased and the sunset is 9.21p.m. with twilight at 10.07p.m.

Much of the town reopened yesterday but shoppers hadn't caught up.

The former beauty salon next to the Manor House has been open intermittently since early June. It trades under &Vimtage, which is the sign of the people who had the shop before the hairdresser

Plenty more cars whizzing around but perhaps it will take a little time for actual shoppers to feel comfortable. As more and more see shoppers in town, maybe then our behaviour will be driven by that of others as it was at the height of March's panic buying. And, Monday's never a good day to judge things: not all shops open on that day, anyway.

Still, there was a good turnout of shops willing to open their doors.

Yet, it was shopping but not as we know it. Screens, masks, face guards, instructions, distancing... it was hardly the most pleasant experience. It felt very foreign and it resulted in a feeling of shopping now being a much less desirable activity and one where you do it not for leisure but for necessity. At least there was little queuing, thanks to the small number of people out and about (the usual queue for the Post Office excepted).

In preparation for a provisional return for hairdressers

A couple of gentlemen in blue Denbighshire polo shirts were touring the town and talking to shopkeepers. They were offering advice but it seemed they were also making mental notes as to whether control measures were in place and adequate.

Meanwhile, there's 175 confirmed cases at Llangefni to remind us how virulent this disease is.
