In an Emergency...

House of Hair & Beauty's coronavirus notice has been up since March 23rd's lockdown. It's one of the more heartfelt shop door notifications we've seen. Most are blunt, colourless, prosaic. This one is personal and its anguish & the obvious melancholy within are nevertheless tinged with optimism.

Emma says, "I have been inundated with messages of support from clients, friends... and people I don't even know" and doesn't this sum up the goodwill we all now have for each other. "People I don't even know". We love getting our hair done in the same way we love a warm bath or a walk in the countryside or a shopping spree. But all these things are ephemeral and above all tenuous or flimsy. When it comes to it, it's people who are important.

Recently, handwritten below Emma's window bill is a note stating, "For an emergency contact, please call Emma on 07527 696335". Presumably that would be a medial emergency. Right? If you read the addition carefully and literally, Emma is actually asking us to enquire about an emergency contact rather than what we believe she means (if you have a split nail).

And, I wonder why everyone seems to string together the digits of their portable phone numbers to make it as difficult as possible for people to read them. In an emergency, surely you need to dial without dither or delay.

In spite of Emma's rather witty addition, the last words must be, "My heart is broken but is also so full from the support and I cannot thank every single person enough".
